Study on the Earth Pressure Acting on the Culvert under the Embankment of High-staked Soil and the Load Reducing Technique

Abstract


The breakage of the culvert under the embankment of high-staked soil is the phenomenon that can often been seen. Because of the over many factors involved , complex condition and the unclear cognition about the stress and deformation properties of the "culvert-soil structure", it is hard to exactly define the earth pressure acting on the culvert. Directed against this, through FEM and in-site test, the paper studies the stress and deformation properties of the culvert and the "culvert-soil structure".Based on the program of MARC, the paper uses FEM of plane to analyze the influence laws of the stress and deformation properties of the "culvert-soil structure" by changing the factors. The factors includes the parameters of soil , the type of the culvert form, the trench terrains and so on. The calculating law based on the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion is used.Because the pressure acting on the culvert is much greater than the gravity of the stacked soil, paving the soft material on the top of the culvert can reduce the earth pressure. Based on the program of MARC, the paper sets up the calculating model of the load reducing measure. Through the calculating, the paper analyzes the influence laws of the stress and deformation properties of the "culvert-soil structure" when the load reducing measure is putted into practice (paving EPS on the top of the culvert). Meanwhile, the paper analyzes the result of the load reducing measure by changing the thickness and the density of EPS.By the in-site tests on the three typical culverts in the highway from Lanzhou to Lintao and Lanzhou to Haishiwan, the paper studies the stress and deformation properties of the "culvert-soil structure" and the earth pressure acting on the culvert. The paper analyzes the stress and deformation properties of the "culvert-soil structure" and the earth pressure acting on the culvert when the load reducing measure is putted into practice (paving EPS or loose soil on the top of the culvert).Based on the above results, knowledge of soil mechanics, the paper establishes the calculating formula of the earth pressure acting on the culvert.On the basis of the formula, the paper analyzes and evaluates a solid engineering. Meanwhile, the paper predigests the formula in order to put it into practice.At last, the paper suggests a simple table to calculate the earth pressure acting on the culvert and the table to calculate the earth pressure acting on the culvert when the load reducing measure is putted into practice.
