Abstract


Currently, the study of domain wall in uniaxial nematic liquid crystals is very complete.The shape of the domain walls in high polymer has been observed by a series of experiments. Inthis paper, the knowledge of domain wall in uniaxial nematic liquid crystals will be extended tothe study of domain wall in biaxial nematic liquid crystals. We use the existing theories ofbiaxial nematic liquid crystals to research the domain wall in magnetic field, then contrasttheoretical results with numerical calculation in order to get a better understanding of domainwall in biaxial nematic liquid crystals.Because the magnetic susceptibility of the three axes of biaxial nematic liquid crystalmolecules are not equal, we can produce different deformations of the liquid crystal moleculesby changing the direction of the magnetic field, thereby form different types of domain walls.Then we use the theory to deal with it.The research is divided into three cases based on the relative size of the moleculesusceptibility of biaxial nematic liquid crystal molecules. We can assume that the angle betweenthe director n and the z-axis is. The functional relationship between and coordinatesshould be considered in each case also. Then we apply the magnetic field along differentcoordinate axes in all cases.After considering all the circumstances, we find a total of12different types of domainwalls, in which half is twist wall with the similar shape and the rest is spay-bend wall with thesimilar shape also.
