Abstract


As a Chinese saying goes,"food is the first want of the people, and land is the first basis of the food," human beings can’t live without food, and in the mean time food can’t be obtained without land, thus, land is extremely important for humans. While China has a large population, it has very limited farmland. Even in the1990s, a renowned American scholar asked the question "Who can feed the Chinese people?" With the growing of the population and the fast development of the economy, our already limited farmland is becoming even less, and the protection of farmland is facing great challenges, which requires us to attach importance to increasing the quality of the farmland. The evaluation of the farmland productivity is significant for the scientific management and sustainable development of cultivated land resources.This study, with Shanggao County of Jiangxi Province as its research area, attempts to evaluate the productivity of the farmland with the assistance of the software GIS and CLRMIS, following the regular technical procedures. The farmland of Shanggao was classified according to the productivity, and measures on management are put forward based on the soil nutrients.The farmland in Shanggao, which amounts to25661.2ha, was classified into7grades based on the IFI. The1st grade is2898.55ha, taking11.30%of the total farmland; the2nd grade3758.88ha,14.65%; the3rd grade4790.37ha,18.67%; the4th grade5301.24ha,20.66%; the5th grade3493.91ha,13.62%; the6th grade2980.15ha,11.60%; the7th grade2438.1lha,9.5%. The figures above shows that the fourth grade is the largest, and the next is the third grade. The seventh grade is the least. Based on the area they take, the seven grades can be ordered as Grade4> Grade3> Grade5> Grade6> Grade1> Grade7. The land of the1st,2nd,3rd grade is primary located in the southwest of the county-Tianxin, Hantang, Nangang, Mengshan, Taxia, Xinjiefu and the north of Aoyan. These places, in the mild climate, are highly-yielded, with the land being fertile and flat, and irrigation guaranteed, because the grains of the soil are reasonably structured and have good pore distribution. In these areas, the land can yield high with nearly any crops on it. The4th and5th grade is mainly located in Jinjiang, Luzhou, Shangganshan, Moshan, Zhendu and Xujiadu. These areas are mid-yielded, with the soil layer having some defects or being eroded, thus, having weak fertilizer-keeping capability. Hence, the structure or the soil needs improving. The6th and7th grade belongs to low-yield land, located in Aoshan, Sixi and Yeshi. The farmland of these grades is highly selective about crops because the soil layer has defects and the productivity can only be ensured when proper improving measures are taken.
