Abstract


The Miao minority boasts a long history and has generated its own ethnicbranches and unique cultural traditions over the centuries. Xiaohuamiao in Nayongis one of the branches of the Miao family and it features all its cultural characteristics.The Lusheng, a reed-pipe wind instrument, is a prominent cultural item that evolvedthrough the development of the Miao culture. However, it also has developed a widevariety of unique craft styles, the Gunhanzhu being an example of this. It bears thehistorical memories and heritage of the Xiaohuamiao, and shows their history,religion, esthetic sensibility, and in a word, their cultural genes. In addition, itstrengthens the ethnic identity and heightens ethnic pride.In the past years, globalization and modernization have become an irresistiblehistorical trend, which brings both great opportunities and challenges for theeconomy of nations and regions. But in some underdeveloped areas especially, theurgent and blind pursuit of profit dominates agendas to the detriment of traditionalvalues and the development of culture. In the shadow of western culture and modernmass culture, traditional local cultures and the values they carry are facingextinction,as is the case for the intangible cultural heritage of the miao culture,starting with the Lusheng dance of Gunshanzhu. This paper studies the ecologicalenvironment, culture content, value and function of the Gunhanzhu and intends topropose methods of preserving these cultural treasures as well as developing thesocial economy of and promote all-round social progress. Apart from theintroduction and conclusion, the thesis consists of four sections:The first section elaborate on Gunshanzhu’s historical and environmentalbackground, using cultural ecology theory to analyze the natural and anthropologicenvironment. The second part focus on an interpretation and analysis of thegunshanzhu’s forms and content based on field reasearch and related references. Thethird part explains the value and function of the gunshanzhu while the last partexposes its difficult position and offers measures to prevent its extinction.
