Abstract

The original motivation of environmental non-governmental organizations comes from the public, which is clearly shown in the history of domestic and forign environmental protection. Until today, various Environmental "NGOs" have been still active in the environmental arena and become a powerful group in promoting environmental protection. The values of ENGOs, guidance for actions, have great significance for the development of ENGOs and its role in the environmental arena. The paper explores the values of ENGOs from the perspective of environmental moral philosopy. It mainly covers:the significance of environmental protection; the values of human life; the adjustment of views on nature, approaches to achieve environmental values. On the basis of this domain of discourse, the paper develops in the following order:Firstly, the basic situation of China’s environmental protection NGO is introduced, including its background, current situation, development and functions. The second chapter explores the values of environmental protection. In terms of the meaning and value of environmental protection, China’s ENGOs primarily aim to seek harmony between man and nature, and ultimately the well-being of people. In terms of people’s lifestyle, China’s ENGOs try to guide people to be nature-friendly and environment-friendly in production, consumption, ways to achieve happiness in life and etc. In terms of the adjustment of the view on nature, China’s ENGOs think people should change the current view on nature that it can be conquered and invaded. Instead, on one hand, poeple should respect nature, be in harmony with nature, and protect nature. On the other hand, poeple should use nature in a rational way. In terms of the ways to realize the values of environmental protection, they are:propaganda and education, exerting influence on governments’ decisions, supervising enterprises, supporting and helping enterprises, organizing domestic and international exchanges, claiming the rights of environmental protection and etc.The third chapter explores the values of overseas ENGOs. In terms of the meaning and value of environmental protection, overseas ENGOs aim to seek the well-being of people too. In terms of people’s lifestyle, overseas ENGOs try to guide people to love nature and live a green life in production, consumption, ways to achieve happiness in life and etc. In terms of the adjustment of views on nature, overseas ENGOs think people should turn the current view on nature into one that human beings should respect and protect nature on one hand, and use nature in a rational way on the other hand. In terms of the ways to realize the values of environmental protection, they educate the public about the environment and ask them to take part in environmental protection, exert influence on governments’decisions and enterprises, conduct scientific researches, seek multifaceted cooperation and etc.The fourth chapter compares the values of China’s ENGOs with those of overseas ENGOs. It finds out the weakness of the values of China’s ENGOs:a lack of national character and practicality. In terms of the necessary content, China’s ENGOs should adapt to the development of economy, culture and society and people’s life. In terms of mechanisms for achieving the goal, China’s ENGOs has to combine the efforts of government, enterprises and the public in order to turn the values of environmental protecion into reality.
