Abstract


On-line detecting surface defects of hot billet has been attached much importance by many industrial countries. Achieving such technology would result in skipping an intermediate stage of cooling the slab and conveying the continuous casting billets to a reheating furnace or a hot rolling mill directly. It will bring a large improvement to the whole produce of steel.Various methods of detecting surface defects are being used in automated industrial manufacturing environments. But those methods are not perfect. In allusion to the three-dimensional (3-D) quantitative inspection for slab surface defects in continuous casting, a inspection method using color area array CCD camera and linear laser generator was established, through the experimental analysis of the slab surface maximum radiation and the laser line reflected light intensity, the laser line threshold scanning imaging method (TSIM) of optimal image definition was established, based on the CCD imaging principle and casting speed the same detection accuracy for slab surface defects2-D shape was studied, and according to the specific spatial relationship of CCD/laser line and slab surface, the surface defects depth inspection method was studied, meanwhile, the system calibration was completed by laboratory experiments. In this system the data mapping from laser scanning distance to image gray value/image stitching and defects3-Dshape reconstruction was completed, the surface defects inspection proposed in this paper improves the positioning accuracy for the regions of interest (ROI) and reduces the recognition interference such as the pseudo-defects of surface water film/iron oxide scale.
