Nowadays Foreign Direct Investment (Foreign Direct Investment) has played a very important role in the economic development in developing countries. Under the surge of the globalization, as a significant media in global industrial shift, FDI provides most developing countries with capital for their fast economic development, which relieves the pressure of the capital shortage in early times and effectively narrows the "exchange gap" and "saving gap" in developing countries. With the governments’efforts from the host countries to improve the software and hardware environments, plenty of FDI has been introduced, which helps the relative industries to grow fast, the inefficient industrial structure to be optimized, and the economy to develop sustainably and rapidly. In order to make a systematic analysis of the economic growth stimulated by the local industrial restructuring effects caused by the FDI in Shanghai, this paper calculates the capital stock by using the relative data such as FDI, labor input and GDP during the period of 1990 and 2009 from Shanghai Statistics Bureau. This paper is divided into five chapters:In Chapter One, the author outlines the background and the significance of this topic, reviews the domestic and foreign scholars’ researches on this topic, and briefly introduces the structural arrangement, synopsis and innovation points of this paper. In Chapter Two, the author defines the concepts and introduces the calculation methodology on it.Chapter Three and Chapter Four are the core parts of this paper. In Chapter Three, from the theoretical view, the author analyzes the effects brought about by FDI on the industrial structure in the host country. At the same time, the author analyzes functional mechanism of the industrial restructuring effects caused by FDI. In Chapter Four, the author chooses Shanghai as a research object in order to prove that the inward FDI in Shanghai results in the restructuring of its industries and the rapid development of its economy. In this chapter, the author tries to demonstrate the current FDI situation in Shanghai with data sheets and graphs. In order to clarify the industrial restructuring effects caused by FDI in Shanghai, the author adopts the quantitative method by putting the industrial structure and FDI in three industries in Shanghai into the regression analysis. Based on the establishment of the C-D Model, using the capital stock, labor input and FDI structure in every industry, this paper applies the vector auto-regression model (VAR), Johansen cointegration analysis, variance decomposition and impulse response function to systematically illustrate the dynamic correlations between the economic growth and the industrial structure optimization which caused by the entering of the FDI in Shanghai. In Chapter Five, the author puts forwards several corresponding suggestions on the basis of the qualitative and quantitative researches in Chapter Three and Chapter Four. The research result shows that FDI has played a remarkable role in optimizing the industrial structure in Shanghai and in improving the local economy. It also shows that FDI has had positive effects in optimizing the industrial structure of Shanghai, which have led to the same positive effects on the industrial restructuring. However, the effects differs in the three industries, the effect is strongest on the third industry, less strong on the second industry, least strong on the first industry.
