Objectives:The liver has the capacity to restore damaged or lost liver cell mass by cell proliferation. Regenerating liver possess a potent self-protection against many hepatic toxins. The well known mechanism of self-protection of the regenerating liver would help in understanding the hepatic physiology and the mechanism of liver regeneration, giving a bright future in the study of hepatic protection.During liver regeneration after 68% partial hepatectomy (PH), quiescent hepatocytes enter the cell cycle. Regenerating liver at different time points of regeneration possess the self-protection against hepatic toxins, and the regenerating liver 96 hr after PH shows the stronggest ability. Hepatic toxicity induced by different toxins through different mechanism, but reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated by almost all of the toxins. ROS cause serious hepatocytes damage by eliciting deleterious effects primarily by oxidizing intracellular components, which is involved in many liver damage induced by hepatic toxins. It is a key point for the liver guarding against hepatic poisoning to limit ROS production and to eliminate the already generated ones.Uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) is a new member of the anion carrier family localized in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It distributs ubiquitously in tissues of the human being and the rodent. The exact physiological function of UCP2 is unclear, but it has been established that UCP2 activity decreases the ROS production. Recent studies have shown that UCP2 has the protective effect on many cells through the function to control the production of superoxide and other downstream reactive
