With the increasing demands for mobile fuel and environmentally benign, much attention has been paid to higher alcohol synthesis from coal or natural gas via syngas due to its properties as the alternative motor fuel. Among the catalytic systems for higher alcohol synthesis, Fe-Cu catalysts appeared to be promising for its higher activity and mild operation conditions and low cost was widely investigated. In this paper, the Fe-Cu catalysts prepared by fast cooling melting method with distilled water were systematically reviewed for the first time. A series of characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), H2 temperature-programmed desorption (H2-TPD) and CO-temperature-programmed desorption (CO-TPD) were employed to investigate the effect of catalysts on the surface structure, physical properties, the adsorption and activation of CO and H2. Meanwhile, the relation between the surface structure and the capability of CO hydrogenation was also discussed. At the same time, the influence of the cooling methods on the catalyst prepared by melting method was systematically reviewed. In the base of oriental catalysts, noble metal Ru and Pd were loaded into Fe/Cu-based synthesis catalysts in order to review their effects on the surface structure and the reaction performance.First, the fusing volt was differed during the preparation of catalysts, and thus the fusing temperature indirectly changed. The effect of fusing volt on the reaction performance, the reduction capability and the surface structure was examined. Based on the above experiments, 150V was confirmed the optimal volt. The ratio of main component Fe and Cu was changed to investigate the influence of ratio on the surface structure and the reaction performance. As a result, optimal Cu/Fe ratio was obtained. The best ratio is 2.5, when cooled in normal temperature, but Cu/Fe=2.0 when fast cooling method was taken. Meanwhile, we found that, the higher alcohol productivity and the C2+OH selectivity of the catalyst samples cooling in normal temperature were evidently higher than those with fast cooling. Moreover the outgrowth with cooling in normal temperature cooling was only 40% of that of fast cooling. On the base of the original catalysts, more catalytic carrier K was introduced into Fe/Cu-based catalysts in order to review the law on the change of surface structure and reaction performance. With regard to normal temperature cooling
