Through a systematic analysis of ecological and environmental conditions in limestone area of Taihang Mountain, the fine and improved apricot tree varieties suitable to the area have been primarily selected from all over the Country, a resource bank for apricot trees has been established and cultivation tests under different site conditions have been carried out in order to conduct a long-term observation on growing adaptability, fruits quality and high-yield property of the different varieties. Considering the site conditions of limestone area in Taihang Mountain and current existing problems in developing economic forest in mountainous areas, some fine and improved apricot varieties adapted to limestone area of Taihang Mountain have been selected out and a new model for good cultivation of apricot trees in this special area has been developed. The research results show that:(1) The apricot trees are resistant to cold, drought and infertility and can grow in sloping land with an elevation of 1,100 m~ 1,400 m. Therefore, the apricot trees will become an important tree species in afforestation of barren mountains, in land conversion to forest and in improvement of ecological environment in local area. This will contribute to solving the conflicts between crop growing and developing forestry, to building and keeping the ecological balance, to getting rid off the poverty and becoming rich, and to realize the win-win purpose of economy and afforestation in vast mountainous areas.(2) The micro-climate and water and soil conditions in the hillside exposed to the sun have decided that the development of apricot plantation in these areas should aim at early fruit-bearing, high-yield, less investment, fast benefits, high efficiency and short growing cycle. Among the 13 fruit meat apricot varieties, Dahuangtian, Huaxian Dajiexing, Lanzhou Dajiexing and other 4 varieties have showed big advantages.
