The experiment was conducted on the rain-proof shelter of Shandong Academy of Agriculture Sciences from 2004 to 2005. Three alfalfa cultivars, WL323, Aohan and Lumu NO.1, were used to study the growth and development of alfalfa in pot culture through two experiments. In the meanwhile, the quality and physiological characteristics of them were studied. Water stress in the experiment was designed at different intensity and different stages. The main results are as follows:1. Effect of water stress on the growth and development of alfalfaWater stress at different intensity reduced main stem height, branching length, number of main stem and branching green leaf, number of main stem and branching tuber, number of branches, total area of individual plant leaves, number of lateral root rhizobium, dry weight of individual plant leaves and dry weight of individual plant, while it increased ratio of cap root length to plant height and root cap ratio. The range of reduction and increase enhanced with the water intensity increased. Taproot length increased under low-grade and middle-grade water stress, and number of lateral root reduced under middle-grade and weightily water stress. Main stem height, number of main stem tuber, number of branches, number of lateral root and single plant dry weight of three alfalfa varieties which were affected under low water stress last year and water supply this year were higher than that of CK in anthesis,
