Formaldehyde is one of the major indoor air pollutant, except its effects on irritating to eyes respiratory tract and allergic and immunotoxic, genetoxic and its on reproductive, the effect of formaldehyde to central nervous system is getting more and more important. To study the effects of inhalative formaldehyde exposure on learning and memory and its mechanism, our research focused on ethology, neurotransmitter, pathology and the expression of NMDAR2B.Methods: Mice were exposed to variours concentrations of gasous formaldehyde for 4 h/day,7 consecutive days, and their behavior of learning and memory were detected, then the mice were sacrificed to measure the levels of hippocampal neurotransmitters by high-performance liquid chromatography and the expression of NMDAR2B in cerebrum by immunohistochemical.Results:1. Comparing with the control group, there were no significant difference at the step-down test. 6.70 mg/m~3 formaldehyde exposure significantly increase swimming time, and mice in groups of 1.34 mg/m~3 and 6.70 mg/m~3 formaldehyde exposure made notable more swimming error.2. In hippocampus, the levels of NE significantly increased at 1.34 mg/m~3 and 6.70 mg/m~3 formaldehyde inhalation exposure in comparison to controls group, and there were no significant difference in levels of epinephrine and 5-HT; 1.34mg/m~3 formaldehyde inhalation resulted in significant reduction in the contents of 5-HIAA. 1.34 mg/m~3, 6.70 mg/m~3 formaldehyde inhalation exposure made significant decrease in the levels of Asp, the same tendency of Glu was also observed in 1.34 mg/m~3 formaldehyde group and Gly, GAB A in 6.70 mg/m~3 formaldehyde group.3. 1.34 mg/m~3 and 6.70 mg/m~3 formaldehyde inhalation exposure cause neuronal degeneration and neuron necrosis, the NMDAR2B positive cell in amygdala
