This paper ,summaried the extensive and all-around research on urban sustainable development.Carried out practical study on Xiamen city.Looked insight into comprehensive evaluation of urban sustainable development after setting up an indicators’system.Then,it maked suggestions to Xiamen in urban sustainable development from the angle of city planning.Fist of all,the paper discussed the main contents of urban sustainable development research,including connotation,resource,environment,economy,society, form and comprehensive evaluation.Based on academic effect and practical effect of indicators’system,applied the principles of scientific,practical,dynamic,representative, comparative,operative, hierarchical, quantitative and the method of combination of qualitative and quantitative, established the indicators’system of urban sustainable development in Xiamen. The indicators’system has three layers.The first layer includes three indicators,which are ustainable environmental index(En),sustainable economic index(Ec) and sustainable social index(Sc).The second layer has 17 indicators and the third has 33.Collected data of each indicator from 1995 to 2004 in Xiamen.Aiming at the convenience of comparing,the paper maked a standard treatment by a math function and get scores of each indicator by Analytic Hierarchy Process method.Applied the method of comprehensive evaluation and calculated En, Ec, Sc and Level Index(LI).Opened out the trend of urban sustainable development in Xiamen.Seen from the figure of urban sustainable development,the stage of Xiamen urban sustainable development is turning into high-grade stage.In 2004,the LI in Xiamen was 0.458,reaching a relatively higher level.The En was 0.216,keeping at a primary better level.Both the Sc and Ec show the rised trend markedly.At last,under the guidance of the thinking about urban sustainable development ,gived some suggestions on Xiamen city planning.Take advantages of zone and environment,constructs a thalassic and ecological city.Exert the important function of special economy district of Xiamen,push the construction of economy
