Abstract

Chromium slag is one of the most hazardous solid residue from chromium chemical industry because of the high content of dissolvable Cr(VI). The present chromate production have brought serious chromium slag pollution and cause sustainable contamination to its near environment. Although many things have been done to treat and recycle the chromium slag in China and some other foreign countries, it is still difficult to find an economic, efficient and applicable technology for the detoxification of chromium slag. The pollution of chromium slag is still a serious problem threatening people’s health and the environment. In order to search for a new method of treating chromium slag, and decrease the pollution of chromium slag, direct detoxification of chromium slag by using microorganisms has been studied in this research. Here shows the main contents and conclusions of the research. 1)The acclimation, selection and identification of the microorganisms. Three strains of microorganisms which can remove Cr(VI) efficiently synergistically have been selected and acclimatized from chromium slag. The mixed microorganisms contained long rod-like, sphere-like and short rod-like strains and named strain I, strain II and strain III respectively. The amount of strain I is more than strain II and strain III among three strains. Strain I is gram positive and the other two strains are gram negative.2)Study on the optimized parameters for detoxification of chromium slag and detoxification mechanism. Compare the effects of detoxification of the single strains and the mixed strains, it can be concluded that the existence of the microorganisms helps to the Cr(VI) transfer from the chromium slag to the medium, and the detoxification effect of the mixed strains was obviously much better than the three single strains. It can be seen from the growth curve of the mixed strains that the exponential phase lies in 2h to 18h and the stationary phase occurred after 18h. Orthogonal tests were carried out in this work to probe main factors affecting detoxification efficiency and optimize detoxification conditions. Temperature, pH and rotation speed were selected as the main factors. The optimized parameters for removing Cr(VI) from chromium slag for the mixed strains are as follows: temperature 30℃, pH = 7.0 , rotation speed 150 rpm. Orthogonal tests showed that temperature is
