Abstract


[ Background ]As a potential curative treatment for diabetes, islet transplantation has attracted much attention long-termly. However, clinical islet transplantation achieved cheerful outcome only in the initial stage after transplantation. Most patients who underwent islet transplantation were subject to a progressive functional incapacitation of islets, which accounted for this phenomenon has not been made clear up to now. In fact, not all the patients who adopted islet transplantation with Edmonton protocol achieved insulin independence, and even some patients had to return to insulin after a duration of insulin independence, which implied that the function of transplanted islets may be influenced by some other factors besides the quantity of islets and immunological rejection. Therefore, in order to improve the long-term therapeutic effect of islet transplantation, it is very important to investigate the other factors that could influence the survival and function of islet grafts.RAS is an important hormone system regulating blood pressure and fluid homeostasis.
