Abstract


Purposes: Aiming at the lack of the researches of the impoverished and single-parent students’ in questionnaires and methods, to increasing the reliability of mental health evaluation, questionnaire by 16PF and MMPI to describe externally the situation and characteristics of the impoverished and single-parent students’ mental health, and to provide the evidence to carry out a specific mental health education course.Methods: A general survey was conducted by means of 16PF and MMPI on all the freshmen enrolled in the years from 2002 to 2004 . Given the situation of our university, we selected the impoverished students from the families with monthly living expense less than 200 Yuan. In general questionnaire, we refereed to the students whose answer was positive on the question of "Are you a single-parent student? " as single-parent children.Results: 1.13.45% impoverished students may have mental health problems, there is no difference in ratio between impoverished students and common students.2.The overall mental health of impoverished students is lower than average students’. It is shown that the impoverished students with the same mental health problem demonstrate more serious symptoms. 3.Impoverished students are often introverted and more likely to find difficulties in social life, which in turn worsens their sense of inferiority and gives rise to more mental problems.4. In general, the single-parent child has poorer mental health than the average one, and he has a higher incidence of mental problem with more serious symptoms.5. The male students and female students are quite distinct from each other as to the influence of "single-parent" to their characteristics. In general, the single-parent students and the average ones are different just in terms of the two factors A and L in 16PF, which shows that the influence of "single-parent" to the students’ characteristics is not as strong as what we have expected. Nevertheless, the female students from the single-parent family and the average are quite distinct from each other in characteristics while the male students from different families show slight difference, which proves that the
