Abstract
Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a promising solution for all optical WDM networks. It combines the benefits of optical packet switching and wavelength routing while taking into account the limitations of the current optical technology. The paper studies the scheduling algorithms at the core node in OBS networks and the impact of OBS networks’characteristics on TCP throughput. Based on the existing scheduling algorithms, a new scheduling algorithm is proposed and is shown to be more effective to reduce the burst loss probability in OBS network. In the research of OBS networks’impact on TCP throughput, the assembly delay and the burst length’s impact on TCP performance is studied in detail. It is found by simulation and theoretical analysis that when a lost burst contains three or more continuous segments, the TCP sender will surely timeout. The result is useful when building TCP throughput models over OBS networks.
