Changes of Circulating Endothelial Microparticles in Patients with Kawasaki Disease

Abstract


Objective:To measure plasma levels of endothelial microparticles (EMPs) in patients with Kawasaki disease (KD), and to investigate the the role of EMPs in KD , and its association with coronary artery lesions.Methods:Flow cytometry was used to measure the levels of circulating CD31 +EMPs or CD62E+ EMPs in KD patients and 24 control groups(including 12 inpatients suffering fever and 12 healthy children). The correlations between the level of EMPs and clinical laboratary findings in KD patients were investigated.Results:Compared with healthy children, the KD patients in subacute phase and convalescence had significantly higher levels of CD31+EMPs and CD62E+EMPs [subacute phase: (P<0.01 vs healthy controls); convalescence: (P<0.01 vs controls)]. The level of CD31+EMPs during the acute phase of KD patients was significantly higher than that in healthy controls(P<0.05 vs healthy controls). The level of EMPs during the acute phase was significantly higher in KD Patients with CAL than in those without CAL(P<0.05) .There were no significant differences among any other groups. The ratio of CD62E+/CD31+EMP populations reflected an apoptotic process. No close correlation between the levels of EMPs and clinical laboratary findings [CRP vs CD62E+、CD31+ EMPs(r=0.287, P>0.05, r=0.274, P>0.05), ESR vs CD62E+、CD31+ EMPs(r=0.148, P>0.05; r=0.153, P>0.05)]Conclusion:The levels of EMPs are elevated in patients with KD than in healthy children, The level of EMPs during the acute phase was significantly higher in KD Patients with CAL than in those without CAL. Measurement of plasma EMP may have some prognostic value in KD, significantly elevated EMPs might become a new predictor of future coronary artery lesions. In addition, the EMP immunophenotype reflected an apoptotic process.
