Abstract


Herbert·Bayer is one of the initiators of rationalism in German design . He , as well as Herman·Muthesius and Walter·Gropius who are the pioneers of modernism design in Germany , regards powerful function and simple shape as the basis for design and creation.This article focuses on the investigations of rationalism features in the design of Herbert·Bayer . Firstly , the interpretation on rationalism style of German design starts from the following parts , including the growth of the rationalism design , main features and the root causes , distinctive representatives and the masterpieces and so on. Secondly, the analysis centers on the rationalism characteristic in the design of Herbert·Bayer. Subsequently , the emphasis turns to the influence to Herbert·Bayer from the designers and their works related . Finally , the analysis stresses on the influence of the localization design in the United States and the changes with Herbert·Bayer’s design .Based on the detailed analysis of the above information , the article appraises the rationalism in the design of Herbert·Bayer from the obverse and the reverse aspects , in the hope that the rationalism of Herbert·Bayer’s design can inspire the new century.
