Abstract


University is a unique institution of the creation of humanity,which has a long history and has played an important role in the development process of human society. With the advent of knowledge economic era, university has ascend from the periphery of social development to the center and become axis institution of the society. Training qualified personnel is one funtion of the university,and has become a hot topic in the area of higher education research. Some universities bring up rational and complete person proceed from the university itself,while others cultivate person who only masters one kind of skill, those person were called“tools”, in order to satisfied the requirement of social development.In fact, the advent of the two different objectives are the result of the interaction of university and social development.The paper discusses the conflict and harmonization of bringing up talents and manufacturing objects from the relationships of university-government and university-market respectively, with the perspective of relationship between university and social development and the development in American universities as the case.The essay consists of four part. Part one is the intruduction, including the raise of the questions,the literature review, the purpose, significance, methods and thought of the research, the definitions and their explaination.Part two elaborates what university is from the following aspects. University is the community of scholars, university is the place to explore and disseminate general and profound knowledge,university is the service station of social development and university is the place of freedom thought and society critique.Part three firstly discusses the conflict and harmonization of bringing up talents and manufacturing object,then analyses specifically with the development of American universities as the case. Examined through the relationships of university-government and university-market, we can find out that America university choose the market mechanisms with the manufacture of government indirectly,which make the university has a certain autonomy. Under the coordination of democratic politics and market mechanisms, the hierarchical stratification of higher education system is improved, which make university maintain balance between government and market.Part four is the enlightenment to the university development in our country from the research of development in American universities.
