Abstract


American research universities have long been connected with social donation, with the help of which, many universities, from its early days of establishment until now, have been gaining strength. These days, a complete system and mechanism has been established for this type of social donation. Research universities attach great importance to it, with the routine donation activities and diversified donation types, facilitated by specialized working staff and commercialized management of endowment, they have accumulated substantial experience. Domestically, it’s a significant strategic objective of higher education to establish world-class universities, so a thorough investigation of this social donation is of highly importance for our nation to probe into broader fund-raising channels.This thesis is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is an overall investigation of American research universities’history of donation. Taking into account of social background of different periods, this chapter also analyzes the current situation and features of social donation. Thanks to the combined support of endowment, alumni and private donation, American research universities’donation have initiated and have been developing to achieve a more prosperous future.The second chapter, an analysis of American research universities’donation’s operation mechanism. The internal operation mechanism is mainly examined from aspects like donation organization and types and also its specific activities.The third chapter takes Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University as examples to elaborate on the operating method of this donation from a microcosmic angle. These two universities play important roles in social donation, so they are taken as typical cases.The fourth chapter is an analysis of the influence factor of the development of American research universities’donation’s. It mainly examined from aspects like economic status, religious culture and tax policy.The fifth chapter elaborate on the features of American research universities, and based on the status quo of the donation in Chinese universities, it analyzes the enlightenment china can get.
