Abstract

A model for the strength of steel-concrete composite beams with unreinforced, rectangular web openings is presented. Steel is represented as an elastic-plastic material with no strain hardening. Openings may be concentric or eccentric with respect to the steel section. With the model, the failure-behavior and the plastic capacity of steel beams with web openings are dealt with in this thesis.Firstly, starts at the concept of composite beam, and introduces the characteristic, performance and design method of composite beam. Web openings allow utility ducts and piping to be placed without increasing the total building height, so a calculation method of plastic capacity of composite beams with web openings is deduced and presented in this paper. With this ingenious and more expansible method, the secondary moment functions-the key stage for capacity calculation are formed. The computing formulas of composite beams with web openings are deduced by the secondary moment functions.Secondly, since the iteration is complicated, a simple program is used to deal with it. Then the plastic capacity of composite beams with web openings can be gained. Some related curves of the internal forces can be gained. According to the calculated results, some force-bearing characteristics of the beams are reflected. In the meanwhile, it can be used directly for design and strength checking of the beams. Further more, changing the characteristics, dimensions, a series of related curves can be gained. According to the analysis, these parameters’ effect on composite beams’ plastic capacity is non-linear, which is in the state of being regular. At last, comparisons are made with test results which were done by ancestors. The validity and applicability of the theoretical calculation can be verified.
