Selection of the Proper Anthelmintic Season for Ovine Ostertagia

Abstract


15 towns covered by 7 counties of Dingxi district, each with different climate and geographical features, were selected as test base. In which area, 157 dead ovines from parasite infections were investigated by anatomization. Identification of collected parasites showed that the main parasite species infecting ovines in Dingxi city were ostertagia, fasciola hepatica, o. ovis and various mites. To uncover the seasonal dynamics of the parasitic infections, 80 ovines from Ming, Zhang, Weiyuan and Dingxi counties were further tested by bimonthly intestine-contained egg counts. Findings demonstrated that the ostertagi infections began rising from the period of March to April, and reached their peak in the period of May to July, then the trend went down month by month, finally to the lowest level in the period of December to January of next year. And such dynamics recycled yearly. To select a effective anthelmintic drug for ostertagi, comparative tests of three drugs, named Ivermectin, Avermectin, and Albendazole, were carried out. Ivermectin achieved alimination percentage as high as 98.3% and 100% respectively of ostertagi eggs and bodies. Ivermectin, therefore was a effective anthelmintic drug. On these basis, 90 ovines were randomly assigned in four groups, named as autumn group, winter group, spring group and control group. Apart from the control group with no treatment, the other three were fed Ivermectin for anthelmintic purpose respectively in September and December, nest year’s March. All four groups were performed intestine-contained ostertagia egg counts bimonthly and ostertagia body counts in May. Data indicated that the winter group obtained the lowest ostertagia egg and body counts, and prevented effectively the spring-wave of ostertagia infection.Thus the ideal Anthelmintic season for ovine ostertagiai was December, which was also confirmed by productive performances investigation of winter-proup in a similar study with 16096 ovines. And also demonstrated in this test, winter anthelmintic created a direct economic value totaling 344,901 yuan (RMB) .
