Abstract

Glycidyl methacrylate was a vinyl monomer having epoxy group. The polymer poly(glycidyl methacrylate) containing epoxy group can be prepared with glycidyl methacrylate by homopolymerization or copolymerization. The functional polymer materials could be prepared by reacted with epoxy group of poly (glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA). So the preparation of PGMA had the practical meaning. ATRP was a new kind of controllable polymerization methods, which coulde keep the monomer from opening the ring and get PGMA with narrow molecular weight distribution. It’s helpful for the further application of PGMA. In addition, the optically active polymer can be prepared by ring-opening of PGMA with another compound, and used as a kind of chiral stationary phase material for high performance liquid chromatographic separation.Well-defined PGMA has been synthesized by using copper(Ⅰ) bromide complexed by N-(n-propyl)-2-pyridylmethanimine ligand as catalyst and 2-bromopropionitrile (BPN) as an initiator in various solvents by atom transfer radical polymerization at an ambient temperature in this paper. The optically active polymer was prepared by PGMA and S-(-)-α-methylbenzylamine. The structure of N-(n-propyl)-2-pyridylmethanimine, the PGMA and the optically active polymer were characterized with FT-IR spectrum,1H-NMR spectrum and 13C-NMR spectrum. The number average molecular weight and the polydispersity index of PGMA were measured by GPC. The atom transfer radical polymerization of GMA is living/controlled polymerization by using copper(I) bromide complexed by N-(n-propyl)-2-pyridylmethanimine ligand as catalyst and 2-bromopropionitrile (BPN) as an initiator by means of ln[M]o/[M] vs reaction time curve, molecular weights vs conversion curve and molecular weight polydispersity vs conversion curve. The influence factors of polymerization rate were discussed. The stereoregularity of PGMA was investigated by 1H-NMR spectrum. It is considered that syndiotacticity, heterotacticity and isotacticity of PGMA have little relationship with reaction time and ratio of monomer and initiator. The stereoregularity of PGMA can be changed with reaction temperature, solvents, the ratio of solvent and monomer, the ratio of initiator and catalyst. The stereoregularity degree of PGMA prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization was higher than that of PGMA by traditional radical polymerization.
