Water space is a vital factor to city waterfront environment, it is important to city dweller for public space and living space. Its open space softens the man-made surroundings in cities. It encourages various movements and meets the life and communicational need as well. Water space is the necessary environment element of architecture and city space. This study is about the water space design in Japan on the base of the development of waterfront environment. With the people foremost design idea, firm design order, diversify design method, synthesize function need, consummate law system and effective manage measure, to insure water space availability use and function maximization. On the base of analyze Japan water space content and feature, it use the method of broadwise and portrait, macroscopic and microcosmic, qualitative and quantify. Sum up the experience of theory and practice in Japan water space design to provide the proposal to water space in our country.This thesis mainly consists of five aspects on water space design in Japan. Firstly, this thesis analyzes background of urban waterfront environment design, elaborates the purpose and significance of the study, expatiates contents and frame, and defines some important concepts. Secondly, the writer conducts a study on ideas, history and changes of urban waterfront environment design. At the same time,I also analyze sequence and methods of the themes. Thirdly, I make a research on riverside space design, which is based on architecture and city. In addition to this, the sociality of riverside space is one of the contents of this paragraph. Then I will analyze practice of Japan waterfront environment by researching concrete cases. Finally, the thesis will summarize the Japanese waterfront environment design, which can be used for reference to our country waterfront environment design enlightenment.
