Abstract

Language is a mirror reflecting the social life. Catchwords that appear in a time and a certain area, along with the spread, are a special kind of words phenomenon with its scope expending gradually. Catchwords have some characteristics such as the use of high frequency, wide range of popular, social impact and so on. Catchwords each period can reflect the characteristics of social life in that period. Catchwords are the phenomenon of language. Language scholars have begun to study catchwords very early.Contemporary Chinese catchwords are the most vivid, innovative, expressive parts of the modern Chinese vocabulary system. Compared with other members of the Chinese vocabulary system, catchwords are "special" and "sensitive". From the performance forms to speak, catchwords are dominated by words and phrases, also part of a fixed format, mainly short sentences. In nature, it is the combined most closely with the times, the most dynamic and cultural part of the words. Speaking from the life cycle, it is the evolution shortest, changing the fastest words. From the current research on the catchwords, scholars focus mainly on the characteristics of catchwords, and the relationship between culture, metaphor status, psychological research and other academic levels of meaning. The study of catchwords can inspect from two angles, the social life and culture psychological level and language itself. On one hand, the catchwords which are so popular are a profound social attributes, which is not only the performance of social psychology, but also a reflection of social and cultural. From this perspective, the research inevitably involves social culture and individual and psychological research. On the other hand, catchwords are the part of language. Their morphological characteristics and trends, etc. will also map out some of the characteristics of modern Chinese. We will also see the research on the catchwords relate to lexicology of the modern Chinese vocabulary and pragmatics issues. Therefore, the research on catchwords has a high social cultural values and linguistic values.This article that is based on the contemporary catchwords, is divided into six parts and discussed the definition and classification, the characteristics, the social and cultural background of the catchwords production, the popular conditions, the development trend and specification and other issues of catchwords. This article based on the contemporary catchwords, through the research on the catchwords of related problems do integrated and comprehensive analysis, and based on the attempt to describe the communication point of view or from the perspective of pragmatics perspective to explain the dynamic nature of catchwords. Catchwords are the part of the vocabulary system, through the study of catchwords, we can see that in the period of social transformation vocabulary system changes and development, and further understanding of the social life at that time the appearance and people’s spiritual domain, which reflects the social change, development and updated. Hope that through our research, we can make comprehensive analysis and macro-interpretation to the composition, characteristics, background factors and trends of contemporary catchwords. And based on these, we hope that we can make certain described to the language of the underlying socio-cultural psychology and language issues.Catchwords are the unique language phenomenon of the language, in a period of time, which have a high degree of attention in the society and constantly enrich the Chinese vocabulary system. But currently, the academia study on the catchwords small and mostly, and lack of integrated, comprehensive analysis. What’s more, catchwords coupled with a dynamic, diversification, and so faster and faster updates, which is easy to hinder the catchwords characteristics of the process of standardization work. It is necessary for us to conduct a comprehensive understanding of the catchwords system and standardized guidance, make the catchwords keep fresh, contemporary and full of vitality and other advantages, in order to make it service for the community healthily.
