Abstract

ABSTRACT Yang shou-jing(1839 ?1915) , a scholar, in the front rank, in the late Qing dynasty and early Minguo Who had impressed the artists both inside and outside of China, made great academic achievements in many fields. He had done re- search on geography, catalogue, edition, inscription and calligraphy as well as classic, ancient lexicography and collecting the discovered ones all his life, during the period he finished writing a great number of works, adding up to 83 kinds. This essay, wholly and systematically, shows the main achievements of Yang shou-jing in the fields of Science of History & Geography, catalogue and version, inscription, calligraphy, books in storage etc. And stated the importance of Yang抯 study on history of academic research and cultural communication be- tween China and Japan. In Foreword, briefly commented Yang all his life and the way that he made achievements. Of his studies, Geography is above all his works, the well-known scholar Luo zhen-yu praised Yang抯 woks in Geography~ Lexicography written by Wang man-sun and Duan yu-cai-~Arithmatic written by Li shan-lan for three top studies in Qing dynasty. Pro. Yuan tong-li working in Beijing University sings high praise for Yang抯 contribution: It makes a new epoch in the field of geography. So some chapters on geography are the most impoi-tant part which have been mentioned. From the first book Maps of the past dynasties?land to the last one notes of rivers, Yang finished writing over 20 kinds of books on geography which covered every sides of Chinese traditional geography. According to Yang?s de- scription about land and river, the drawing of historical maps, the examination and supply to State geography, the edition of history of the region, etc. It sums up Yang抯 achievements, particularly, describs study of Li and mention the time and the reasons why Li wrote Of Rivers, by the judgement of Yang to the case ?? DOCTORAL DISSERTATION of Zhao-Dai, it also gives his own viewpoints. The author pays more attention to Yang?s research on of rivers, Notes of rivers, Li?s version, Comments of Li?s study, Drawing of historical maps, Study of Yugong, expressed the ideas of geography, bringing it to light that Li? s study is the core of Yang?s idea of geography, the essay pointed out that, Yang was regarded as a representative of the group of Li抯 study, its finding is beyond the experts, such as Thu mou-wei, Quan zu-wang, Zhao yi-qing, Dai zhen, Wang xian-qian etc. His works of Past d~a sties?map of territory was at the peak in the ancient times, it is also a milestone in the history of drawing maps. Yang summarized the achievements on Science of history and geography by his major works, and his works full of drawings & words enlightens the new re- searchers in geography and history, his methods of studying in archaeology and inscription, pioneers the new way. Yang抯 study in edition and catalog, nobody could match him, this chapter introduced emphatically Yang抯 visit to Japan, Discovered books of Classic in the past dynasties, Discovered catalogues of the ancient times, Select series, etc. Yang stressed the textual research of catalog and version, firstly laid out the Chi- nese discovered books in Japa
