Abstract

Bel Canto was produced in Florence,Italy in the seventeenth century. After developing through several centuries, it has yielded various genres and they have spread throughout the whole Europe and then the world. Bel Canto poured into China with the upsurge of the May 4th Movement of 1919, afterwards, it rooted and burgeoned in the soil lacking of the western music.Since the introduction of this elegant art, the development of Chinese Traditional Music has been influenced in the background. The process that The Western Bel Canto and Chinese Traditional Music collide,refer and blend is the development of the nationalization of vocal music in modern Chinese history.In order to make the blossom of Bel Canto in the newly established period clearer, the synthetical analysis and study of the background of Bel Canto by combining the study methods of history, sociology and musicology and historical materialism theory is made in this text. Furthermore, through looking up abundant information, absorbing predecessors’ research achievements and considering the comprehensive factors of politics,economy and culture, the text merely studies the development of Bel Canto over the last two decades.Therefore,Bel Canto in an initial development stage could be more vividly and deeply studied and summarized. We write this text to offer some valuable reference to the scholars.Bel Canto is of ancient origin in China.As early as Sui and Tang Dynasties period, China had the tradition of intaking foreign music literature.When foreign culture melted into our national art, more beautiful music would be produced. Meanwhile, this would necessarily bring the new opportunities to Chinese Traditional Music. This was also another leap in national vocal music history.In modern history,since the school has begun o learn songs,China started its first rapid development of oversea education.Chinese learned music theory from foreign countries and imitated music system of foreign schools.The second rapid development of oversea education appeared till the rise of the May 4th Movement.Under the guidance of the new culture and thought,as the foreign advanced culture,Bel Canto was introduced into China.From then on,it began its difficult period and established foundation for itself development.Bel Canto experienced a tough spreading period in China.Then it gradually developed by the expansion of professional colleges and concerts.It appeared in big cities in the 1920s and spreaded in the next ten years.This illustrated that Bel Canto already had its position, and it would have further development in China.Over the last two decades, the composers played an important role on melting the foreign sound pronunciation and the method of articulation into Chinese singing techniques.Their works turned foreign method of articulation into Chinese one,and transformed the songs and operas in foreign styles into those of Chinese characteristics.Besides making us graspe the foreign singing techniques,the composers made the works contain more Chinese features and fit Chinese aesthetic habits.Not only did they push forwards the development of Bel Canto, but also had a crucial effect on the process of vocal nationalization.Bel Canto obtained a big achievement during the last twenty years. The first generation of vocal music educators, for instance, Zhou Shu-An,Ying Shangneng, Su Shilin and Zhao Meibo, worked hard,cultivated Chinese second generation of vocal music educators and increased the quantity of this team. In published thesises and works,these educators began to elevate this abstract art to theory.This was a break in vocal music history.Bel Canto brought an unprecedented teaching mode,artistic style and appreciation guidance to China.The introduction of Bel Canto furthered Chinese vocal music,and brought limitless vitality to China.
