As a traditional Chinese rhetorical device, the proper use of rhetorical device-pun can make the language implicative, ingenious, vivid and humorous. Actually, rhetorical device-pun has been widely used by Chinese people and thus become a frequent research object in Chinese rhetorician history. Under the related theories of Chinese rhetoric, rhetorical psychology and pragmatics, and exemplified with some instances, this thesis has conducted a systematic study with from the following two perspectives:the construction and the application of rhetorical device-pun. The construction of rhetorical device-pun has been studied systematically from the aspects of the construction psychological mechanism, construction conditions and construction principles. While starting with the application of rhetoric device in media, poetry, customs and etiquette, two-part allegorical sayings and crosstalk, sketch, drama, etc, and combining the related theories on linguistics and pragmatic, the application of rhetorical device-pun is also investigated. In conclusion, the ingenious use of rhetorical device-pun can add mysterious power of language, which makes it possible to express our real meanings implicitly.
