Abstract

As the focuses of modern sciences, non-linearity sciences, complexity studies andself-organization theories are being used widely to analyze complex problems in the fields ofengineering, economy and society. Self-organization deals with the spontaneously formingprocess of objects’ structure in which involves particular self-organization’s characters, conditions and dynamics laws. Being the law of nature to the evolution of complex system, nature and human society, self-organization methods are consistent with materialistic worldview and methodology. The successful combination of self-organization theories and urbansciences has gained such a lot of remarkable achievements that the self-organization theoriesof urban system become today’s hotpot.Under the guidance of human geography, economic geography and urban sciences, thepaper adopted the scientific achievements of system theories, self-organization, neweconomic geography and microeconomics to make up the theory framework of the urbanself-organization process taking division of labor and specialization as the start so thecommon laws of urban system self-organization evolution and the related theories ofconglomeration effect could be studied thoroughly. Meanwhile, the paper made a deep discussupon the great issues of China’s urban development based on self-organization theories.Chapter 1 is a systematic summary and commentary on system theory, self-organizationtheories, pointing out self-organization theories can explain not only the nature worldincluding physics, chemistry, biology, physical geography etc., but also the social andeconomic phenomena. And self-organization is the internal evolutive mechanism and form forboth nature and human society.Starting with the discussion on urban concept, Chapter 2 expounds and proves the origin, behavior and essential characters of urban complexity from multi-angles and then reviews 7theories and models of urban system self-organization.Chapter 3 observed on theories and models of the dynamic mechanism of urban systemself-organization in the fields of new economic geography and new classical microeconomics.Furthermore, by reviewing the theories of urbanization mechanism from new classicalmicroeconomics, explanations were made on the proposition that even if the earth’s surfacewere homogeneous, towns would still come into being. Therefore, the paper clarified that thedynamic mechanism of urban system self-organization was ultimately resulted in theendogenous comparative advantage brought by the evolution of division of labor andtransaction.By combining the self-organization theories and new classical microeconomics, Chapter4 expounded the original state, conditions, evolvement route, self-organization motivity in theprocess of urbanization self-organization and explained original urban equilibrium, criterionof self-organization condition, break, route choice and dependence, competition andcooperation. With a further discussion on the coming process and effects of division of labor, competition and cooperation and space conglomeration, the paper put forward the conclusionthat the reciprocity among division of labor, competition and consumer preference was thereason of complexity rise and conglomeration motivity in the urban economic system. In theend, comparison and validation were made in the field of urban theories by Marx and Engels.Chapter 5 used self-organization thinking to discuss the theories of urban developmentand urban planning. For the internal unitive connection between views of scientificdevelopment and self-organization thinking, the paper pointed out that urban planning shouldbe under the guidance of views of scientific development and “five harmonies”, and at thesame time the equilibrium of public interest should be insisted in order to avoid both marketfailure and government failure. At last, based on the discussion of urban overspread which isquite common nowadays, the paper pointed out building economizing and compact citiesshould be the important principle in China’s urban planning and construction.
