Abstract


In knowledge economy era, various organizations pay more and more attention toknowledge management(KM) and its efficient application in order to enhance theirown competitive ability. At same time, KM also is considered as hot point of researchby different research field and has been researched from different viewpoints, e.g.management science researches theory and method of KM, knowledge engineeringresearches the process and technology of knowledge processing and computingscience does researches on knowledge management system (KMS) and expressing,understanding and reasoning of knowledge. Based on those researches, this PHDresearch focuses on conceptual modeling of distance education institution’s KMSaccording to demand coming from knowledge economy era and knowledge society,real world’s requirement of end-user and present state of KM in distance educationinstitution (DEi), and based on existing technique and application software ofsemantic web and ontology engineering. Principal content of this research can bedescribed as below:This research has analyzed management activities in DEi and classifies thoseactivities into three main types as organization management, business managementand knowledge management. It interprets character, effect, component, object andsubject of each type of management activity and states aim, main process and task ofknowledge management in detail.After analyzing running process and main business of DEi this research concludes itssituation of creating and using knowledge according to different daily activities, thenclassifies four types of domain knowledge in DEi which are organization knowledge,service knowledge, distance teaching & learning knowledge and subject knowledge. Ittreats the previous three types of knowledge as chief content of KM in DEi and bringsforward service knowledge as one type of DEi’s knowledge for the first time.Based on questionnaire investigation and content analysis, this research combines the data coming from up to down and down to up approaches to analyze the present stateof DEi’s knowledge management, user’s real requirement of knowledge and demandof KMS. Those form the real world requirement of KMS to DEi.Supported by existing technology and application tool, this research creates the firstconceptual model of KMS to DEi and analyzes its structure, components, functionsand application patterns in detail. It considers layers of ontology engineering andintegrative service are pivotal and core components of the model.Using method and technique of ontology creating, this research creates ontologies inontology layer including domain knowledge ontology, using context ontologies andlog ontology. The domain knowledge ontology of DEi’s knowledge is the first generaldomain ontology in distance education. The using context ontologies intend to useontologise to implement context-awareness of knowledge using which combine bothontology technology and context-aware technology of pervasive computing withKMS firstly. The log ontology is a trial of integrating present log technique of searchengine and ontology into KMS. Both using context ontologies and log ontology canbe used by any other field’s KMS directly.As there are seven different ontologies in ontology layer in the conceptual model, thisresearch proposes an integrative approach to implement ontology management indistributive and multi-ontologies’ application environment which can supportontologies to work more efficiently, be updated timely and cooperate seamlessly.This research also gives analysis of method and technique of semantic annotation,visualization and capture of knowledge while it describes the logic process ofintegrative service layer’s running in the conceptual model with UML method andfirst-order logic which makes the KMS can support possible usage in it.
