Abstract

Halogen bonding is non-covalent interaction between a halogen atom and aLewis base, and it is similar to hydrogen bonding at the mode of interaction. Sincehalogen bonding has important applications at crystal enginerring, supramolecularliquid crystal, biology, solid state synthesis, etc., it attracts more and more attentions.In2007, Fang Wang in our laboratory reported layer-by-layer assembly via halogenbonding for the first time. Halogen-bonded layer-by-layer is still in the starting stage. In this dissertation, we designed and synthesized some new halogen-bonding-donorpolymers and halogen-bonding-acceptor polymers. The new halogen-bonding-donorpolymers include poly(vinyl3-iodobenzoate)(P3VIB), poly(vinyl4-iodobenzoate)(P4VIB), poly(4-iodophenyl acrylate)(PIPA), poly(vinyl4-bromobenzoate)(PVBrB),poly(4-bromophenyl acrylate)(PBrPA), poly(2-(4-iodophenoxy)ethyl methacrylate)(PIPEM). The new halogen-bonding-acceptor polymers include poly(pyridin-3-ylmethyl acrylate)(PPy3MMA), poly(pyridin-4-ylmethyl methacrylate)(PPy4MMA)and poly(3-vinylpyridine)(P3VPy). We also used several polymers synthesized byother graduate students and those purchased from chemical companies. Thesepolymers were separately attempted to assemble layer-by-layer films in organicsolvents. It was found that many pairs of polymers were able to be used to assemblemultilayer films. These results increased the possibility of the use of halogen-bondedlayer-by-layer assembly. We assembled multilayer films with PITPEM and PVCL in acetone, and testedthe solubility of the multilayer film in many organic solvents. On the basis of Hansensolubility parameter, we used a solubility sphere to successfully describe the solublezone of the film. On one hand, this sphere can be used to predict the solubility of thefilm in other solvents. On the other hand, we can select assembly solvent of the filmon the basis of this sphere.
