Abstract


With the improvement of people’s living standards, people pay more and moreattentions on environmental sanitation and personal healthcare. At the same time,the rapid development of industrialization brings about a variety of environmentalpollution problems, which cause a large number of pathogens and opportunisticpathogens growing and spreading around people’s life. When these harmfulbacterium adhere to the surfaces of daily-using items, they will breed immediatelyunder suitable conditions and spread out to harm human health. How to givingdaily-using items, especially plastic products, antibacterial properties using arelatively easy method, has became a real and urgent subject.In this paper, we used two kinds of common industrialized antibacterial agentsadding methods, the direct mixing method and masterbatch method, to dope theself-made silver-containing inorganic antibacterial powder into engineeringacrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS) plastic to fabricate antibacterial plastic. Theantibacterial plastic specimens were injected on a injection molding machine. Thenthey were introduced to a series of property tests, including: observing thedistribution of the antibacterial powder in the matrix using scanning electronmicroscope(SEM), testing the antibacterial properties of the specimens using acovering film method, getting the releasing curve of antibacterial elements with aperiodic immersion assay, examining the long-lasting antibacterial activity andinvestigating the antibacterial mechanism during a liquid cultural antibacterial test,using tensile test and hardness test to find out whether the adding of antibacterialpowder will affect the mechanical properties of ABS plastics.The results show both direct mixing method and masterbatch method couldbring out uniform distribution of antibacterial powder in the plastic matrix.8‰-dose would make this antibacterial plastic meet the antibacterial requirementstoward Escherichia coli(ATCC25922) and Staphylococcus aureus(ATCC6538). Ainitially high, then decreased, and later sustained silver release rate into de-ionizedwater at55℃was got duringthe immersion test. The long-lasting antibacterialactivity was confirmed by the excellent anti-E.coli ability of the plastic blocks after immersed for even170h during the immersion assay. Cell division and propagationwas inhibited, cell wall and membrane ruptured, smooth rod-shaped bacteria bodybecame atrophy and flat, all there led to the death of E.coli when interacted withthe antibacterial plastic. The tensile strength and plasticity of the plastic decreasedjust slightly with the increase of the antibacterial powder, which means that8‰antibacterial agent doping dose will not affect this antibacterial plastic’s usingrange, neither changing its injection process.
