Abstract

Canisters and filters loaded with activated carbon are widely used forchemical defense and chemical accidents rescue thanks to the great adsorptionperformance of activated carbon to chemical warfare agents and toxicindustry chemicals (TICs). However, now the chemical defense equipmentscan not well meet the requirement used for chemical accidents rescue for itsshot protective time, bulk dimension, difficulties in flexibility andreplacement, and so on. Therefore, it is great significance and practical valuefor the research and development of new activated carbon materials for theimprovement of chemical protection.A new kind of material called activated carbon monolith (ACM) wassuccessfully prepared with BN09granular activated carbon and EVA resin asraw materials on the basis of screening evaluation and optimization of processparameters. Its hydrodynamic performance, compressive strength and porestructure were tested. Benzene was selected as adsorbate and its dynamicadsorptive behaviors on the ACM bed have been studied. The effects of thethickener, adhesive contents, inlet concentrations and airflow velocity on thedynamic adsorptive capacity for benzene of ACM were investigated incomparison with that of BN09granular activated carbon and ACM thatprepared with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC).The air resistance of ACM was less than that of granular activated carbonin the air volume of0.016-0.08m3/h·cm2, which can meet the demand ofadsorbing the toxic and hazardous gas in high air volume on chemical defense. The compressive strength of the ACM is more than0.12MPa per unit square centimeter area, which could be used as adsorbent for air purification. TheBET area of the ACM is about701m2/g and its micropore volume is morethan0.404mL/g, which has high benzene adsorptive capacity. The experimental results indicated that the thickener and the adhesivecontents are inversely proportional to adsorption performance; the dynamicadsorption capacity increased with the rise of benzene vapor concentrations, and the adsorption rate is all most constant; the adsorption rate increased withthe rise of the airflow velocity, and the dynamic adsorption capacity is allmost constant. The benzene dynamic adsorption capacity of ACM thatprepared with CMC has little loss in comparison with that of BN09granularactivated carbon, but its adsorption rate was very low; the benzene dynamicadsorption capacity of106.39mg/cm3and the adsorption rate of920.43min-1of this ACM was obtained in the optimal conditions, with the decline of theadsorption performance less than10%and the breakthrough time less than5%.Wheeler equation and Yoon-Nelson equation are used to correlate thedynamic adsorption data, and the correlation coefficients were from0.985to0.999, which indicated the calculated values agreed with the experimentaldata well.
