Abstract

The modification of waterborne acrylic resin was presented in this research, the synthesis processand characterization of its properties were further studied in detail.Waterborne acrylic resin was prepared at the presense of salt formed by methyl-methacrylate(MMA), butyl acrylate (BA) and acrylic acid (AA), it was then modified by grafted copolymerizingwith epoxy resin and curied with ether of melamine-formaldehyde (EMF). The structure of the resinwas characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and1H NMR spectroscopy, the reaction mechanism of graft modification was discussed. The DSC method was applied to test thethermal stability of the resin. The effects of curing agent types, dosage, curing temperature and curingtime on the properties of the resin were studied. The results suggested that, for acrylic resin (AC),when the amount of curing agent was20%, the coating prepared at150℃and50min curing timeexhibited superior performance in aspects of mechanical, weatherability, alkali resistance andcorrosion resistance; for epoxy modified acrylate resin (EAC), the optimal performance can beachieved when the addition amount of curing agent was20%, the reaction temperature at130℃andcuring time of30min.With home-made epoxy modified acrylic resin as the film-forming material, zinc phosphate asactive antirust pigment, ferric oxide red as physical antirust pigment, calcium carbonate and kaolin asfiller, water-borne anti-corrosion coating was prepared. The effects of different ratios of resin tocuring agent, ratios of pigment and filler, curing temperature, curing time, pigment volume content(PVC) on the properties of the coating were studied. The sample morphologies were thencharacterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results proved that a good balanceamong physical-mechanical properties, weather resistance and corrosion resistance was achievedwhen the weight ratio of EAC to curing agent was2:1, the weight ratio of zinc phosphate, iron oxidered and calcium carbonate was1:1:1.3,and PVC was25.8%.An aqueous ambient crosslinkable polymer acrylic emulsion was obtained by adding adipic aciddihydrazide (ADH) to the polyacrylate emulsion incorporating diacetone acrylamide (DAAM). Thepolymer emulsion was characterized, Laser scattering was adopted to analyze particle size of theemulsion. The results of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) demonstrated thathydrazone was formed during the crosslinking reaction of ketones and hydrazide. It turned out that theeffects of different polymerization technologies, amounts of DAAM and ADH on the properties of the emulsion and latex film were discussed, the glass-transition temperature of the latex film was testedby DSC. The results revealed that the emulsion and latex film had better comprehensive propertieswhen the amount of DAAM was2.4%-3.5%and the equivalence ratio of ADH/DAAM ranging from1to1.2.
