Abstract

Printing and dyeing industry is one of the industrial segments which consume a large amount of water and meanwhile produce plenty of wastewater. There is a large quantity of liquid waste with low colourity, and low content of organisms produced in washing process during printing and dyeing. If the wastewater is treated and reused, water consumption in printing and dyeing process will be greatly reduced. At the same time, the environmental pollution can also be alleviated effectively.Decoloration is very important to the treatment of wastewater.Reactive dye is of many outstanding properties such as low price and good dye ability. It has been widely used in dyeing of cotton fabrics. So,decoloration of the low concentration reactive dye wastewater is selected and investigated in the paper.Vermiculite,a kind of layered aluminosilicate clay, has many special physical and chemical properties resulting from its structure characteristics. It has been widely used as an excellent adsorbent in various industries. The organic vermiculites are obtained by intercalating the native vermiculites with organic quaternary ammonium salts which have different concentration and different carbon chain length. The organic vermiculites are applied to treat wastewater of the reactive dyes. The results indicate that the adsorption property of the organic vermiculite intercalated with hexatrimethylammonium (HDTMA) in 4CEC is better than all others. The organic vermiculite prepared is used to treat four kinds of reactive dye wastewater. Experiments are conducted. The effect of the reaction time, the dosage of the organic vermiculite and pH value of the wastewater on the process of the decoloration of the reactive dye solution is discussed. It can be found that the decoloration rate increases with the increment of the dosage of the adsorbent and time, while the increasing in decoloration rate slows down gradually. The decoloration rate for the reactive dye solution is higher at low PH value and it decrease significantly with the increment of pH value. However, the decoloration rate of the reactive blue BR and the reactive red 3B solution increase slightly at pH=12.The satisfactory conditions of decoloration of the low concentration reactive dye wastewater by the organic vermiculite is t=120min,D=2g/L,pH=4. The mechanism of the organic vermiculite adsorpting the reactive dyes is analyzed using thermodynamics and kinetics of adsorption. The results indicate that the adsorption of the reactive blue BR and the reactive orange 5 from wastewater by the organic vermiculite has a good agreement with Freundlich isotherm equation. The adsorption of the reactive yellow 3G and the reactive red 3B conforms to Langmuir isotherm equation. The adsorption kinetics results illustrate that the adsorption of the reactive blue BR,the reactive yellow 3G and the reactive red 3B is in accordance with the pseudo-second order equation, and the adsorption of the reactive red 3B also fits the pseudo-first order equation. The adsorption of the reactive orange 5 fits the pseudo-first and the pseudo-second order equation.
