Abstract

When the ship’s strength is assessed, it has been common to considerthree strengths, which are longitudinal strength, transverse strength andlocal strength. Among these, longitudinal strength, that is ultimatestrength of ship hull structure, is the most fundamental and importantstrength to ensure the safety of a ship structure. The above-mentionedultimate strength is the strength that don’t consider the defect. During theentire operational process of a ship, the ultimate strength of the hull willbe gradually reduced because of corrosion and fatigue. Obviously, theship’s ultimate strength is a time dependent issue. So it is necessary tostudy the ship’s ultimate strength considering the time-varying effect. The contents of this paper are as follows:(1) Comprehensive analysis of the domestic and foreign ultimatestrength of hull girder strength are conducted, the importance of thetime-varying effects in the calculation of the ultimate strength of hullgirder is pointed out.(2) The use of the Progress Collapse Method-Smith method incalculation of the ship’s ultimate strength is introduced, the stress-strainrelationship of the three units are derived in detail, the time-varyingfactors such as fatigue crack damage and corrosion damage areconsidered in the method.(3) The use of the nonlinear FEM in the calculation of the ship’sultimate strength is introduced in detail, two box girders and a shipstructure are calculated with the method in this paper, the results provethat the method proposed in this paper is feasible. (4) The program VB_UStrength, Which is based on the Smithmethod for calculating the ship’s ultimate strength, is updated. A newmodule considering the time-varying effect has been added. Thecomparison with tests, FEM method and BV’s commercial softwareMars2000show the program has good accuracy.
