Abstract

In the great transition process of the Chinese city and society, the urban complex has become one of the most significant city-making components. Its collective nature and gigantic scale have multiple influences over economy, traffic, culture and living conditions in the contemporary context. Especially, the urban complexes are of vital importance in the new towns construction.The outdoor connection of different urban complexes plays a key role in the design process, it could not only efficiently exploit the urban space, improve the living environment, enrich the spatial experience within the building, but moreover it has the ability to fulfil citizens’psychological and physical demand of the sense of belonging and the desire of a true public life. Since these problems have aroused increasingly wide public concern, we should start to take the issue of outdoor connection between urban complexes seriously, and the form and composition strategy are the two primary factors in its design process.Since people are the user of the connection space, human body should have a very intimate relationship with the morphology of the particular space. The thesis firstly aims to discovery the spatial demand of certain behaviors like walking and staying. Secondly, it tries to use diagrams to list the spatial prototypes of complex connections. Finally, it further discussed the characters of different types of spatial morphology and the experiences they provided.The connection of urban complexes is a multi-orientation, multi-layers and multi-nodes system. Its spatial composition is arranged largely according to site condition, urban context and architectural functions. Thus, the thesis is not intended to approach a general design solution of complexes’connections, but to summary the principles of it though comparing foreign and domestic cases. The five principles I got through the study is the connectivity, the accessibility, clarity, continuity and concentric.The argument about the morphology of connection space and the principles abstracted from the case study would become precious assets for the further design.
