Insulators on high voltage transmission line are widely used in huge amount, which are certainly essential devices in power system. Insulator is affected in various factors in the running time. So, there is definitely a small number of faulty insulators appear on the transmission lines. The existence of low voltage insulators is a threat to the robustness of the running of power system. Up to now, there are some detection methods of faulty insulators.This paper is based on the analysis of detection methods of faulty insulator running on power transmission line, a new method is put forward to detect faulty insulator, which is identified by the distributed voltage, and takes account of the leakage current and pulse current. A set of detection device is designed, which can detect the faulty insulator through quantitatively measured distributed voltage, leakage current and pulse current of the string running on 220KV and under this voltage grade power transmission line. Firstly, the measurement of the sensitive insulator is done respectively through all the ABC phases by using this device. If needed, this device also measures the leakage current and the pulse current of this string. Through all the procedure above, a comprehensive analysis is done in the control module. Finally, the specific position of low voltage insulator is determined.The device adopts small high voltage divider with high precision, and uses low power microcontroller. Combined with detonate by contact, the device could guarantee the save of electric energy. The radio frequency technology is also used, and anti-interference measures are taken to enlarge the communication distance. The framework of the device is taken into account to make sure the high reliability and intelligence. So, the device is reliable, portable, practical and intellective.
