Studies on Artificial Propagation and Host Selection Behavior of Pyemotes Tritici(Acari:Pyemotidae)

Pyemotes tritici(Newport) is an important parasitic nature enemy to woodborers like Sphenoptera sp. and Adosomus sp. damaging Artemisia ordosica. Mass-rearing, storage, transportation, release methods and host selection behavior were studied. The main results of the study are outlined below.1. It revealed that host was still suitable for parasitizing after being frozen. Frozen larva or pupa of Semanotus bifasciatus and larva of Tenebrio molitor were substitute hosts.2. Hosts treated at-20℃for24h were used for mass-rearing of P. Iritici under25-30℃. Results showed that diameter of expanding abdomen increased rapidly at early period of mites’ development stages and remained unchanged at late development stages.3. At26±1℃,RH40%, the expanding abdomen at6d’s development stage was a suitable form for storage and0℃was a suitable temperature for storage. Expanding abdomen could produce a great number of offspring at room temperature after being stored for45d under0℃. The expanding abdomen after5d’s development stages could produce a lot of progeny after being stripped from the hosts, so it was a suitable form for transportation and release.4. The parasitic rates to Sphenoptera sp.and Adosomus sp. were respectively46%and11%in the field,63%and33%in the pot experiment.5. The mites at6d’s development stage on Sphenoptera sp. and Adosomus sp. had the super-cooling points of-15.75and-28.51℃6. P. tritici would choose Sphenoplera sp. and Adosomus sp. instead of Holeocerus arlemisiae when all three species of larvae were supplied under the same environment. GC-MS was used to analyze the odorants of these three species of woodborers larvae. It showed that types and amount of volatile chemicals on H. artemisiae were richer.7. Differences were found in sensilla types between leg Ⅰ of female and male adults, leg I and the other legs of female. The sensilla located only on female were considered relevant to host founding.
