Effects of Different Technology on Quality and Cracking of Fortunella Crassifolia Fruits during the Tree Storage

Abstract


In order to understand the effects of covering with plastic film and preharvest calcium sprays on quality and cracking of Yangshuo kumquat (Fortunella Crassifolia Swingle cv.Yangshuo) during the tree storage in Yangshuo county. The Yangshuo kumquat trees were treated by different spraying calcium times and covering with plastic film treatments from December20,2010to April15,2011, and the dynamic changes of the fruits qualities, fruits cracking and physiological indicators were analyzed in the study. The results were as followed:1. During the whole storage period on the tree, the fruit firmness, TSS and TS content of kumquat fruits treated with plastic film covering were0.53%to24.16%higher,1.21%to12.96%higher,0.71%to62.48%higher than that without plastic film covering respectively. The Vc content of kumquat fruits treated with plastic film covering was2.08%to22.69%lower in the first month and0.07%to32.43%higher in the second and third month than that without plastic film covering. The TA content was0.81%to22.68%lower than that without plastic film covering at the same period.During the whole storage period on the tree, the preharvest calcium sprays could maintain higher fruit firmness, improve and maintain the Vc, TSS, TS content, TSS-TA ratio and TS-TA ratio, and reduce TA content effectively.2. Storage on the tree of Yangshuo kumquat covered with plastic film to mid-April of the next year, the cracking fruit rate was only about1%. But the fruits of Yangshuo kumquat trees without plastic film covering were cracking seriously in the second month after treatment, the cracking fruit rate reached more than98%on March22,2011. The preharvest calcium sprays could reduce the fruit cracking rate to a certain extent, but the effect was not obvious.3. Water content of soil and leaf of Yangshuo kumquat trees without plastic film covering were27.17%to78.35%(P<0.01) higher,1.11%to9.18%(P<0.01) higher than that covered with plastic film at the same period respectively. 4. The calcium and potassium content of normal kumquat fruits treated by plastic film covering were0.98%to25.12%higher,1.82%to16.89%higher than that without plastic film covering at the same period respectively. The preharvest calcium sprays could improve and maintain calcium and potassium content of normal kumquat fruits.The calcium and potassium content of normal kumquat fruits treated without plastic film covering were0.72%to41.94%higher and7.79%to23.92%lower than that cracking fruits at the same period respectively. The result showed that higher calcium content and lower potassium content of kumquat fruits could reduce fruit cracking.5. The respiration intensity, electrical conductivity, MDA content of normal kumquat fruits treated without plastic film covering were21.64%to221.46%higher,2.16%to21.70%higher,36.93%to141.20%higher than that plastic film covering at the same period respectively and all P<0.01. The preharvest calcium sprays could restrain the increase of respiration intensity, electrical conductivity and MDA content of normal kumquat fruits, three times of spraying calcium was more effective.The respiration intensity, electrical conductivity, MDA content of cracking fruits treated without plastic film covering were7.57%to130.71%higher,22.05%to91.29%higher,44.79%to252.86%higher than that normal kumquat fruits at the same period respectively, all P<0.01.The results indicated that lower respiration intensity, electrical conductivity and MDA content of kumquat fruits could reduce fruit cracking.6. The SOD, CAT, POD and PE vitality of normal kumquat fruits treated by plastic film covering were2.14%to59.08%higher,20.11%to219.44%higher,1.43%to45.99%lower,0.21%to59.67%lower than that without plastic film covering at the same period respectively. The preharvest calcium sprays could restrain the decrease of SOD, CAT vitality and the improve of POD and PE vitality.The SOD, CAT, POD and PE vitality of normal kumquat fruits treated without plastic film covering were2.32%to94.97%higher,5.88%to163.46%higher,1.18%to59.38%lower,1.82%to48.08%lower than that cracking fruits at the same period respectively. The results demonstrated that higher SOD, CAT vitality and lower POD, PE vitality of kumquat fruits could delay fruit cracking.
