Abstract


Objective:To assess the status of job stress and the association of job stress with the coping style among nurses.Method:293 clinical nurses were investigated using Chinese nurse stress scale (CNSS) and Trait Coping Style Questionnaire (TCSQ). Pearson’s chi-squared test and one-way analysis of variance were used to test the differences of the proportion and means between groups for categorical and continuous variables, respectively.Results:The nurses between from 25 to 45 years of age, and 5 to 15 years of work experience had significant higher job stress than others. The main stress was from nursing profession, workload and time allocation, work environment and resources, and patient nursing. Nurses with higher education level had higher score of nursing profession. Marriage status was related to stress of work environment and resources, and management and human relations. Physical activity could reduce the stress. Nurses with positive coping style had much lower level of stress than those with negative coping style.Conclusion:Nurses between from 25 to 45 years of age,5 to 15 years of work experience, and with high education level had significant higher job stress. Positive copying style and physical activity could reduce the stress.
