Abstract

The most direct way to study the nervous system is to analyze the mechanism of sensory systems. Compared with other sensory systems, olfactory system, because of its simplest structure, is a breakthrough point of understanding the information processing as well as the mechanism of memory in human brain. In recent years, the mechanism of evolution for the periglomerular cells of the olfactory bulb during the process of biological evolution, as well as the function of the periglomerular cells in olfactory encoding are attracting our growing concerns. As we can see from the study of neural information encoding based on the analysis of simulation and modeling, the electrophysiological model of the periglomerular cells has an important role in the understanding of the above-mentioned issues.First of all, we have a brief introduction of the anatomy of the olfactory system, the cell types in the olfactory bulb, olfactory pathway, as well as the electrophysiological characteristics of the olfactory system. Moreover, we elaborate the latest progress in the study of the heterogeneity of periglomerular cells based on different classification criteria such as chemical substances、structure、ion channels and action potentials. Furthermore, according to two of the criteria above, we establish some typical electrophysiological models of heterogeneous periglomerular cells. At last, combined with our present work, we propose a future development of the electrophysiological experiments of periglomerular cells, the modeling of periglomerular cells as well as the olfactory information encoding. The models we establish here could lay a solid foundation for constructing a more realistic model of the olfactory network and do good to the further study of olfactory coding.
