Abstract

In consecutive interpretation, it should be possible to preserve semanticcoherence in the output because the interpreter has notes and hasrelatively sufficient time to process the information of the original speech.Only by doing so can the speaker’s logic, viewpoints and intention beclearly communicated and understood by the audience. Note taking istherefore essential. Based on a simulation of a consecutive interpretingcase, this paper analyses the positive and negative effects of note takingon output semantic coherence, and provides solutions on how notes canimprove output semantic coherence.
