Abstract

The paper researches the change of rural society in transition and development depend on one of the key events in rural people’s daily life——marital payment as the cut-in point from the perspective of social change. The family of bridegroom and bride has always been the main body in marital payment negotiations in the process of rural marital payment. But in recent years, the new couples’importance has been mostly reflected, which makes the change from the original interaction between both families to the game between the new couples and their families.An innovation in this paper is the change of the negligence on newlyweds in the previous research, and takes the new couple as a pole in marital payments.Totally the author will do a discussion in-depth about the interaction among the three parts of the new couple and their parents.The paper defines the time point of this change as2000A.D. and does the comparative study in two groups between the couples who married in10years before2000and after2000. The author analyzed all kinds of strategies in the marital payment process took by the bride family and the bridegroom family. The bride family maintains their traditional dominant position in marital payment via claiming strategy which based on the considerations of perspective of payment; and claiming strategy which based on the considerations of their daughter’s life guarantee and the marriage protection; and corresponding strategy under the constraints of the marital payment practices;and seeking symbolic capital strategy based on the considerations of face.While the groom’s family mainly adopted the strategy of strengthening intergenerational relationship, the strategy of implementing of matchmaker system based on economical considerations, and the strategy of paying the bride price directly to the daughter-in-law. Both families take their own strategy in marriage interaction based on their own interest and the spirit of maximizing their benefit.When the new couple’s status gradually rises, they have realized their own initiative, and they will take more action to defend their interests.In this process they have occupied the main status in the marital negotiations. What strategies they have adopted are:the dominance of the way they inheriting their property, pursuing their own independent space, the pursuit of the material constitution in the new family and the form evolution of the couple conspire. While the position of the couple’s parents in marital payment negotiation have been declined at the same time.These occurrences of changes from the strategies between both families to the strategy which new couples take personally opposite to their family is not immediate but after a long time accumulation and evolution. There have many reasons about it. The reasons are mainly divided into four parts:the living space change of the new couple, the quest for independence, the promotion which the ascending of the status of women did to the reach of couple’s alliance and the external conditions’feasibility that made by parental and patriarchal fading.
