Abstract

Customers usually describe product requirements with nature language in the early stageof product design. The efficiency and result of design depends on scientificallyunderstanding of customers’ real intention. The formal and structural description of productrequirements is beneficial for designers to elicit and precisely understand designrequirements, and then to make right design solution. On the other hand, the increasinginformation in international engineering design makes cooperation and communication moreand more frequent and important. Language barriers have become difficult point of furtherproduct collaborative design in communication and cooperation.Recursive Object Model (ROM) can sufficiently represent all linguistic elementsinvolved in the product requirements. ROM specifies product requirements, it can helpdesigners precisely understand design requirements. Integrating product requirements in thedesign process, it can make contribute to improve design efficiency and quality. In this paper,we propose a novel approach for cross language transformation based on ROM inunderstanding product requirements. Product requirements in the form of source naturelanguage are transformed into ROM represented by target language. The cross languagetransformation method based on ROM first generates corresponding source ROM fromsource requirement language. Then classify objects into restrict and non-restrict semanticobjects in terms of ROM relationship. At last, we do transformation for objects bypreserving semantic and then generate target language ROM.A case study illustrates the feasibility of our transformation method. We also propose amethod to evaluate the precision of transformation from semantic. The method views thecapability of ROM semantic representation as one factor of criterion. Our evaluate criterionnamed TRE is similarity to the BLEU. Experiments show that our method can reach agreater improvement than the traditional machine translation in preserving semantic duringthe cross language transformation.
