Meteorological station is widely used in agriculture, hydrology, transportation and other fields, and is of great significance for industrial&agricultural production, and transportation. Currently the widely used meteorological station is made up of one or more meteorological instruments, auto-meteorological stations, data acquisition computers and comprehensive processing computers, the meteorological instruments and auto-meteorological stations communicate with data acquisition computers through external bus. Since the different vendors’ meteorological instruments and auto-meteorological stations have different communication interface and communication standard, the meteorological equipments and the computer management software provided by various vendors can not compatible with each other. That is to say, it is hard to use different vendor’s meteorological equipments in a set of automatic meteorological station.Based on the analysis of meteorological observation technology and meteorological industry standards, and on account of the status of meteorological instruments and actual demand, this paper aims to make a communication protocol research and design to solve the above problems. In order to verify the feasibility and the superiority of the protocol on comprehensive auto-meteorological station, we design an embedded meteorological instrument protocol converter based on the WINCE platform and CAN bus. Through the CAN bus hooked up with different vendor’s meteorological instruments or auto-meteorological stations, the meteorological instruments and auto-meteorological stations follow the protocol, the meteorological instrument protocol converter can identify the manufacture of the meteorological instrument or the auto-meteorological station, and also can transform the data flow, realize the real-time comprehensive display by the web form in the upper machine. The whole system design contains hardware and software design, the hardware design mainly contains the selection of the system power supply, the CAN bus and the Ethernet module; the software design contains the WINCE system customization, CAN bus drive and Ethernet card driver program design, CAN data communication program, Ethernet data communication program, SQLite database develop and real-time display design by the web form in the upper machine, etc. Research and design shows that according to the communication protocol, it is feasible and suitable for the identification of each meteorological instrument and automatic meteorological station’s manufacture and data. The protocol converter designed on basis of CAN bus has certain advantages in realizing the integration of the system, reducing the amount of the upper machines and saving the cost of the cable wiring.
