Abstract

In recent years, with the global fossil energy reserves are dwindling, rising oil prices, theimportance of energy becomes more and more obvious. In order to meet the need of sustainabledevelopment, people turn their attention to renewable energy. Biomass as the only renewablecarbon resources is drawing more and more attention and concern. At the same time, organicacids of biomass become more and more important. So how to the organic acid of biomass highefficiency, low consumption and directly into alcohol or diol which we need has become moremajor.Supported metallic catalyst with high activity and stability has received wide attention fromacademic and industrial circles. It is considered as one of the hot topics in catalysis research atpresent. This paper firstly studied the performance of transition metal oxides supported noble metalcatalysts for the catalytic hydrogenation reaction of levulinic acid. The relationship between thestructure and the performance of catalysts was studied in detail using characterizationmethodslike XRD the main results are obtained as follows:1. The effect of transition metal oxides on the hydrogenation activity of noble metal catalystsprepared by impregnation was investigated. It was found that the addition of transition metaloxides have a strong promoting effect on the catalytic hydrogenation of levulinic acid over silicacatalyst supported on rhodium. Strong synergism was observed between noble metal rhodiumand the transition metal oxide promoters.2. The effect of molybdenum oxide content on the activity and selectivity4%Rh-MoOx/SiO2catalyst for the hydrogenation of levulinic acid to1,4-pentanediol was studied. The best catalyticperformance was observed over the4%Rh-MoOx/SiO2catalyst with Mo/Rh ratio of0.13.Promote amount N0.13>N0.25>N0.07>N0.53. The influence of noble metals on the performance of catalyst was investigated. Rh wasfound to be the best catalyst. Noble metal catalytic activity is Rh>Ir>Ru>Pt>Pd.4. The stability of4%Rh-MoOx (0.13)/SiO2was studied.During the30hour continuous test,no evident change of activity, selectivity or leaching of active component over4%Rh-MoOx(0.13)/SiO2was observed, which means that the4%Rh-MoOx(0.13)/SiO2catalyst has goodstability.5. Excellent performances were observed when Rh-MoOx/SiO2catalyst was used for thehydrogenation of biomass derived monocarboxylic acids, like acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric, valeric acid; dicarboxylic acid like Lactic acid, malonic acid succinic acid and fattyacids like lauric acid, palmitic acid. We found: transition metal modified with noble metals supported catalyst for selective hydrogenation of biomass organic acid synthesis of alcohol andglycol has a certain universal applicability and unitary fatty acid increased with the number ofcarbon atoms, the more prone to excessive hydrogenation reaction. Large molecules of fatty acidbecause of its low water solubility of ethanol as solvent, we choose will have large molecularcarboxylic acid reaction part generates the corresponding alcohols and fatty hydrocarbon. But theconversion rate is not high.
