Abstract

With a booming catering industry in China, a severe kitchen waste disposal problemaroused more and more attention recently. Nowadays in some big cities of China likeGuangzhou, more than4000t kitchen waste needs to be disposed per day. How to deal withthe large amount of kitchen waste is getting more and more global attention lately. Traditionalways of kitchen waste treatment include feeding pigs, incineration with the other garbage, producing pet food and composting. However, experts pointed out that, it was not healthy tofeed animals with kitchen waste or its products. Bio-fertilizer transformed from kitchen wastehad poor quality while landfill disposal brought serious environmental pollution and occupieda large area of land. This paper focused on the kitchen waste ways of pyrolysis, anaerobicdigestion and transesterification.Firstly, this paper studied the pyrolysis characteristics of kitchen waste mixed withtypical biomass, including sawdust and sugar cane leaves. The study was carried out on atubular furnace pyrolysis system. Secondly, pyrolysis characteristics and kinetic parameter onkitchen waste and rice was studied. Moreover, the energy consumption and environmentalimpacts of the kitchen waste treatment plant were analyzed. This plant focuses on the way ofusing kitchen waste to produce biogas and biodiesel through anaerobic digestion andtransesterification. For the sake of a comprehensive illustration of such a process, the energyconsumption and environmental impacts of this method compared with those of landfill andincineration were discussed. Finaly, the costs and benefits of these three kinds of kitchenwaste treatment were analysised. The result shows that, the CO yield of pyrolytic biomass increases from400to650℃and decreases from650to900℃. Meanwhile, the CO yield of pyrolytic kitchen wasteincreases all the time, the same as the H2yield produced of biomass and kitchen waste. Inaddition, the pyrolysis products of biomass can absorb SO2at high temperature, which almostcomes from the kitchen waste. To improve the moisture contained of the kitchen waste helpedto improve the H2proportion of the pyrolysis gas. The pyrolysis process of kitchen waste hadtwo weight loss peaks, which took place at temprature of320℃and435℃, with the averageactivation energy value of137.38and253.93kJ/mol. Through anaerobic digestion and transesterification, by disposing of1t kitchen waste, net energy output was about11.8%and10.9%higher than those of landfill and incineration. It was not only a moreenvironmental-friendly method of kitchen waste treatment, but also a way with higher energyutilization efficiency.
