Abstract

The wet copper-based friction pair is applied to the clutch of tanks and other heavy machinery, it works in high velocity and high load conditions. In order to grasp the wear characteristics and dominant factors which influence the wear of the friction pair in the working process, it is important to carry out with study of wear map for wet friction pair to attempt to monitor synchronously for friction and wear properties of the wet friction pair. The wear map is used to analyze the friction properties of materials in a system and reflect the change of properties in direct, in the most, the research method can assess and predict the friction and wear properties. In this study, according to the similarity principle, the test parameters for the wet copper-based friction material were determined by referring to the real operation condition. The tribological properties of the copper-based friction material were investigated in simulated condition. The wear map of the wet copper-based friction material was constructed by analyzing the friction coefficient, wear surface, wear debris and temperature field. The results show that:(1)The friction coefficient increases nonlinearly with the increase of the sliding velocity and load, and it maintains in the range of0.070to0.100.(2)In the high energy density working conditions, the surface temperature of the friction pair soared because of the deterioration of lubrication conditions. The dominate failure mechanism of the friction surface is fatigue wear and the main debris is flake debris. In the low energy density working conditions, the dominate failure mechanism is abrasive wear.(3)The mechanism map can divided into three regions:mild wear region, severe wear region and transition region. The dominate mechanism of wet copper-based friction material under mild wear (W<10-5mm per times) condition are plastic deformation and micro-ploughing, whereas under severe wear (W>10-4mm per times) condition it becomes fatigue wear. The dominate mechanism of transition region is abrasive wear.
